Natalie Ryan "White Install 6 Bodies"
Devoid Matter is a fascinating exhibition of artificially flocked taxidermy casts. The animal forms are arranged in installations of white and black that seem to reflect one another across the space in positive and negative, like a mold and cast.
The forms, internal casts of animals, are pared back to their basic shape. There is nothing of the uniqueness of their long perished bodies and they stare silently with bright artificial eyes. The strongest and most intriguing piece is White Baboon, a cast of a baboon, with the same muted form as the others except that it bares, within its gaping jaws, a full set of ferocious teeth as a reminder of its natural existence.
For all of its intensity, the show has been put together well and does not crowd the intimate space of Dianne Tanzer Gallery.
