Oblique is an exhibition of nine Large photographs depicting Stelarc’s extra ear surgery in which he had a cartilage ear constructed and implanted into his left forearm. The images allow the viewer to gaze into a fascinating, uncomfortable and beautiful space in which the body becomes an art form.
The images do not shy away from the surgery and are very much about the ambiguities of inside and outside the body. Fortunately I am not squeamish when it comes to images of surgery and I have always held a fascination for all things bodily and anatomical. Oblique is a wonderful project, well worth seeing for amazing images of Stelarc’s body performances, excellent photography and unique views of the body as a performance space.
The Guildford Lane Gallery itself is a large versatile space, a converted furniture factory that opened recently. There is still some work going on so it was a bit noisy when I visited, however, I am interested to see what will happen there in terms of upcoming shows and events.
