Studio: Australian Painters on the Nature of Creativity is a show of sixty one large scale photographs of distinguished Australian painters in their studios. Each image is accompanied by a text about the artist, how they work within their space, the often mundane routines that occur within a studio in order to produce a body of work and their ideas about the creative process.
The viewer is guided through diverse work spaces from Margaret Olley’s bright Paddington studio, cluttered to the ceiling with fruit, flowers, tea sets and furniture to Alice Springs with an image of Gloria Petyarre seated on the floor with a few small pots of paint and an enormous canvas spread out before her.
With this format Studio could have easily become a mundane show-and-tell museum exhibit, instead it has achieved so much more. This is a show that pushes the ideas behind portraiture by revealing individuals within their own intimate creative spaces.
