Periodic Table Project is an exhibition of 118 works that explores in terms of historical, cultural and social impact, each chemical element within the Periodic table.
It is obvious that a great deal of research and hard work has gone into putting this project together. The project itself springs from a strong and imaginative idea and the starkly different styles of Flanagan and Dyson combine quite well.
However, When I visited the show in person I was disappointed. It seems that the hard work and original ideas are not enough to bring the show together successfully. Observing the work on the walls in the library space I was reminded of a junior high school art project. I’m not sure whether this is due to a combination of the naive drawing style with the simplistic method of exhibiting the works, or that the drawings themselves are too small for the space and their impact is lost.
The strength of the project lies in the accompanying website where the images contain a strength and unity that was absent in the exhibition.
