Masquerade is an intense show of seventeen works on canvas that demonstrates Ruiz’s skill with structure, texture and composition. His painting strikes a balance between weighty shadows and fresh warm tones.
The works are figurative depictions of people however the faces, sombre as boulders, transcend portraiture and become landscapes of plains and angles with dark crevices and bright sunlit peaks. The faces simultaneously gaze inward contemplating some internal world and stare out toward the viewer.
One of the strongest paintings in the show is the work Amarillo (masquerade number 3). While its not a large piece its presence is monolithic. The face, wearing that same two-way gaze seems to be carved from the shadows and layered textures of the paint.
Masquerade is an excellent show that is exhibited well within the gallery space.

I am totaly blown away. The strength and life of these works are truly wonderful. I haven’t been this impressed with someone’s work for a long time. Bravo! Bravo!
I think that Paul’s work is the freshest and best work I have seen in years. I wish I could see them here in the US. Ron
