I think that Paul's work is the freshest and best work I have seen in years. I wish I could see them here in the US. Ron

Someone has just sent this crique of Art Melbourne. Couple of things. Margaret Olley was represented there; in fact, I understand that 2 works sold.
A friend of mine has a reasonably new gallery (just over 2 years) and had a stand for the first time. She has some really good artists, and two stand-out: surrealist painter Patricia van Lubeck and realist painter Sandra Whiteside. Maybe you missed that stand Emma!

Better for each artist to have been restricted to 1 or 2 works.artists followed directive re theme and purpose of this group show.as a tasmanian and along with other artists from the island state, we registered our concerns re the politics of conservation and forestry as these have dominated and continue to dominate our daily existence.Fewer works would have had a greater impact according to friends who attended the opening.exceptions to the theme were works of marjorie brotheridge -concentrating on fruit trees in our backyards. Are these trees cheap cultural tokens?

I think it is worth noting, that Emma is hardly an ardent feminist - so it's unlikely to be a case of preemptively looking for fault in the golden oldies section. A crude example: Margaret Olley must surely be in the same category as John Olsen and worthy of mention in a show such as that (Disclaimer: I've lived with Emma for 9 years and didn't go the the art fair and do own a john olsen :-) and no "famous" female artworks - perhaps I too am to blame?).

Thanks for the review Emma. It is dissapointing that the 'golden oldies' are dominated by male artists, Margaret Preston made a bit of dosh off prints and oddly thats exactly what medium the exhibition was lacking as well.

I agree wholly with your closing paragraph, the melbourne art scene is a lot more than a collector-fest but for new collectors they are an easy, safe introduction into the unknown and possibly intimadating territory of the Melb art scene.
