Adaptation, an exhibition of sculpture and installation, curated by Mark McDean, is one of several events taking place across Melbourne during the Seven Thousand Oaks Art and Sustainability Festival.

Adaptation presents a complex discourse based on the mission and values of Joseph Beuys (1921-1986), whose work was grounded in social philosophy, using art as away to participate in and shape society and politics.

The approach that the artists have taken in this show is to create work as an intervention of space, where the sculpture moves away from walls and off plinths to inhabit the gallery’s own architecture.

The strength of the show and the work that most successfully incorporates the themes of sustainability and the habitation of space is Web by Tim Craker. A large net-like structure made from dried fennel stems and jute twine, Web stretches between two of the gallery’s structural pillars. The work is conceptually strong, engaging ideas of foraged and found objects and is aesthetically beautiful, the dried stems carry the deep aroma of fennel engaging the viewer both visually and with smell.

All the work in Adaptation is large, dramatic and striking, however the gallery space itself  is unsuitable due to being overly rustic and untidy. The gallery does not provide a conventional  “white box” space for the work to perforate and as a result much of the visual impact of the exhibition is lost.

However, the show is dynamic and well conceived and the festival itself is an exciting investigation into the possibilities of art in the context of sustainability and the community.

69 Smith Street presents zwischen den zeilen - between the lines, a large exhibition of recent work by artist Michèle Meister. The exhibition focuses on the line and the written word and many of the drawings use torn pages from books and printed text as a mark making device.

The exhibition occupies both ground floor galleries and consists of over forty works that depict iconic human, bird and animal figures, layered and constructed in oil, encaustic, pencil and even rust. With this medium-heavy approach Meister trades subtlety for monument, often reducing the subjects to their basic shapes.

While the artist’s drawing skills are sophisticated enough to support these techniques, the strongest examples of work and the most exciting aspect of the show, are the artist’s sketch books and visual diaries.  The sketchbooks, available for the viewer to browse through, reveal thought processes and observations that contain an immediacy and sensitivity that is somewhat lost in the larger paintings and drawings.

The show, while busy, makes good use of the space and the sketchbooks provide an insight into the work that strengthens the whole exhibition.

The Weekend Australian Art Melbourne 2010 is an expo of “affordable art” where galleries from across Australia and overseas come together to show their represented artists.

The event focuses on easy art purchasing for the gallery-shy and as a representation of art and culture, Art Melbourne 2010 signifies nothing. Most of the work exhibited is about product, put there to sell and any indication of creative or cultural process is quite absent.

Throughout the show the lines between ornamentation and fine art are blurred and the viewer is presented with a mass of stylish compositions, David Bromley-esque figures and fashionable palettes. Much of the work seems to have been produced solely for the art fair and if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then the “affordable art scene” is a very complimentary place.

Among all of this, though there are a some genuinely beautiful pieces of work that allow the viewer to immerse themselves and properly engage with the art. The exhibitors that do make the show worth visiting are James Makin and Lindberg galleries who are showing stunning examples of painting and drawing, from early and mid career artists. Obscura Gallery presents the striking photography of Emma Hack and at the Brunswick Street Gallery you will actually find a diverse range of emerging talent.

For the $20 entry fee and to get the most out of the expo, it is important to make the distinction early, between investing in an artist’s work and the flip it quickly approach the art fair has taken.

Drift is an exhibition in which man-made structures signify humankind’s precarious relationships with the landscape, that uneven balance between our love for nature and our need to control our surroundings. Most of the images depict coastal settlements, with bridges and lighthouses representing place as a romantic ideal as well as physical location.

The paintings, bright and chaotic, reveal sophisticated mark-making, the loose and frenetic treatment  along with the intense colour harmonises into carefully observed and composed landscapes. Through this application, Benson creates compelling impressions of the texture and colour of towns and landmarks that are instantly recognisable.

Many of the images move beyond the usual landscape on paper composition, with some presented in triangular format like beautiful, ragged banners. While there is a lot of work on show, the exhibition makes the most of the gallery’s large space.

Under a High Desert Wind is a large exhibition of work that emerges from the artist’s experience of the Australian interior landscape during expeditions to the Flinders Ranges in 2008 and the West McDonnell Ranges in 2009.

The works are at once wild and sophisticated representations of the landscape, constructed from memory and impression, evident in their sweeping compositions, as well as observations of form, colour and light. Among the landscapes there are unusual rustic interiors, country style kitchens that are signified by the the presence of  plucked geese and glasses of wine where the subtle tones and surface of the bird’s flesh presents a beautiful contrast against the rugged exterior that pushes relentlessly through the kitchen door.

The strength of the show and the work that most embodies Sciberras’ marriage of feeling and seeing, is Monument Fllinders Ranges 2010. The impact of this painting is incremental, building up tone and texture that seems to strike the viewer from a distance, presenting a monolithic and intimidating obelisk of dark land against bright sky.

The show is a large and varied collection of work, however the drama of the oil paintings is not overbearing as the intensity of the exhibition is balanced by the freshness of the smaller works on paper.

Songs of Dedication is a show of 50 figurative works that lead the viewer through a circus of imagination, symbolism and narrative.

Worlds of interconnected myth and meaning are created on paper and canvas and Antoniou’s symbolic resonance is matched only by the energy and skill behind the drawings. Exquisite figures, both human and non-human cavort and play, acting out moments of life, memory and thought. Charcoal, graphite, intaglio and paint are all delivered in strong lines and rich shadows that lend the compositions a theatrical presence.

While this presence may give the impression of being light hearted, even playful, closer inspection reveals a solemness within the figures as though each performance signifies some sacred ritual.

Songs of Dedication is a dense and beautiful show that works well within the light and open space of the gallery.

James Makin Gallery presents From the Cabinet of Dr. Moreau, a dazzling  bestiary dragged from the depths of twin human impulses to dominate the natural world and to explore our monstrous fantasies.

The title of the show recalls Wells’ 1896 novel  The Island of Dr. Moreau, in which one man’s scientific abuse of nature brings forth monsters. As the tale unfolds it is revealed that it is Moreau who is truly monstrous, inflicting great suffering in the pursuit of earthly perfection.

As in the tale, the monsters Milojevic creates are purely human in construction, conjured from our own psyche and displayed within lavish unnatural environments. Milojevic’s technique is thoroughly absorbing, combining repetition, colour and diverse printing techniques to create remarkable images that are at once familiar and alien.

The most striking work in the show is the intensely detailed and textured Outside/In, a wallpaper series of 48 panels that covers a significant area of the gallery space. This piece bears the marks of the artist’s hand and has a more satisfying patina than the sleek digital prints. From The Cabinet of Dr. Moreau is an intriguing show that reveals both Milojevic’s intense imagination and technical ability.

Darkness Visible is an exhibition of dense and intriguing digital prints in which the layering of objects, light and landscape test the boundaries of perception. The visual convention of landscape is disrupted as the juxtapositions slant horizon lines, dissolve human faces and cut glittering paths of water though primeval forests.

A recurring theme in the show is Nature, presented as a dominant force that eludes any attempt to name and therefore control it. While Szilagyi employs common archetypes of dreams, darkness and woods, she spares the viewer any clichéd fairy tale symbolism. Instead, what Szilagyi brings out of the ever-shifting layers is an intense and beautiful light that strengthens each image and binds the show together.

This is an absorbing body of work that commands the viewer’s full attention as the true strength of the exhibition lies in its subtle detail.

Sampler is an exhibition of fine jewellery installations where miniature ornaments, pendants and broaches resemble an antique entomology collection rather than objects of adornment or fashion accessories.

In this show Findeis references the collecting phenomenon of the enlightenment, where the dissection and  labeling of diverse elements was a way of ordering and controlling the chaos of the natural world. Along with this historical perspective, the miniature works also possess a more contemporary scientific sensibility as a few of the specimens depict isotopes, fabricated in precious metal and stone.

The objects in Sampler are at once eternal and transient. The permanence of the materials used in their manufacture  is edged by the ephemeral nature of a museum collection, where without a great deal of care and restoration, the specimens will slowly and surely turn to dust. The works on show are more than beautiful trinkets, they are expressive and sculptural works of art.

On now in Gallery 2 of Craft Victoria is is a collaboration between artists Gracia Haby and Louise Jennison that presents a wunderkammer of paintings, prints, collage, postcards and artist books.

A show that centres on themes of nostalgia, love and introspection, the title comes from words in Hermann Hesse’s 1927 novel Der Steppenwolf and the artists have created artefacts based on the story’s sense of longing and displacement. The result is an alternate universe of fantastic curiosities, of pain and dreams made flesh.

The ideas come together most successfully in the lithographs which take the best elements of the collages and watercolours and reflects most succinctly the theory behind the show. The combined skill of the artists and the quality of the work is capable of supporting the narrative concept, which after reading the exhibition statement would have been no easy feat.

A Key to Help Make Your Own World visible is a superb and intriguing exhibition that works well within the gallery space.
